The 2002 ArdenCup

We had another great year at the ArdenCup with 124 players and a couple of spectacular finishes. Over $9000 was given out in cash prizes. Special thanks go out to Bob Denn for all of his hard work and dedication which ensured yet another successful ArdenCup. Thanks also to Elizabeth Berman and Lisa Slankard for their help during the tournament (they were honored as the namesakes for the special prize - an Adjudicator Clock donated by Gene Tyszka was given out to the highest scoring play containing the letters E, B, L, & S.). Thanks also to Melissa Routzahn and Stephanie Steele for organizing the great party on Sunday night at Lou Malnati's Pizzeria. As for me (Jason Brooks), I did my part running the computer program to pair the rounds and print the results between rounds. Now on to the results!

In Division A, Chris Cree, Nathan Benedict, and Marty Gabriel held the top 3 spots from game 9 on with frequent lead changes. Round 19 saw Chris Cree pitted against Nathan Benedict. A win for Chris would guarantee him first place. A win for Nathan would force a rematch in the KOTH round 20. It looked like Chris was on his way to victory when the Q found its way on his rack in the end game allowing Nathan to win the game. Chris fought back in the rematch in round 20 to win the game and the division taking home $1,100 and the ArdenCup Champion trophy.

Division B was the most tightly contested division. After 16 rounds, only 2 games separated the top 10 players! When the dust settled, Richard Lauder found himself on top of the pack. Carol Dustin who was in 12th place after 12 rounds, went 7-1 in her last 8 games to finish in 2nd place. Eric Ziegeweid who was on top of the field a couple of times throughout the tournament finished in 3rd.

Division C was the largest division in the tournament. Melissa Routzahn who ended day one in 9th place at 5-3 found her groove and went on to win 11 of her final 12 games to take first place. Charlie Alexander took second place and Daiva Markelis finished in 3rd.

Division D was the only division where the Gibson rule was used in round 20. Vijay Ragothaman dominated the field finishing 18-2. Matthew Ridout who agreed to play up from Division E in order to help us even out the divisions found himself in 2nd place when all was said and done. Helen Hankwitz came in 3rd.

Finally, in Division E, Brenda Brunson who led after day one was able to hang on to claim first prize. Brett Haughney came in second while Ricky Sirois took 3rd.
